How Horse Racing Free Bets Work
A horse racing free bet is a stake the bookmaker funds for you, usually unlocked by opening an account and placing a qualifying bet of your own, typically £5 or £10 at minimum odds of 1/2 to evens, settled within a set window. Once that first bet settles, win or lose, the free bet tokens land in your account and you have a limited time to use them, often seven days. The key difference from a cash bet is that the free bet stake isn’t returned with your winnings: a £10 free bet on a 5/1 winner pays £50, not £60. That one rule shapes how to use them on the horses. Win-only bets at bigger prices extract more value than each-way, because the place half of an each-way free bet returns very little once the stake is stripped out. Most bookmakers settle free bets at the price you take, and several exclude them from Best Odds Guaranteed, so take an early price you’re happy with rather than relying on SP. If your horse is a non-runner, most bookmakers return the token to your account, but a voided qualifying bet doesn’t count towards the offer and you’ll need to place another.
