Pigeon Forge Shows Promise On Debut At Hereford – Race Report

Pigeon Forge made an encouraging first start under Rules at Hereford on testing ground on 12th January.

She was well supported as one of the market leaders at 4/1 in a ten runner field. Settling beautifully for an inexperienced mare, she raced prominently under Harry Cobden and travelled smoothly as the leading group pulled clear. However, around two furlongs out she began to feel the effects of the testing, soft ground and came under pressure to hold her position. She understandably tired in the closing stages and will come on for the run after an absence since May. With her chance gone, Harry was considerate in the finish, and she came home a respectable fifth.

After the race, jockey Harry Cobden gave us his verdict on the performance:

“It was very tacky ground. She gave me a nice feel and ran better than the result. Once we couldn’t win I wasn’t hard on her, gave her one little flick and put the stick down. She needs a bit of nicer ground and we should have some fun with her.”

Trainer Emma Lavelle reported the following day:

“Pigeon Forge is absolutely fine this morning. We now know we can go and jump hurdles on nicer ground.”

This was a pleasing run that suggested there’s more to come, and we’re looking forward to seeing our lovely chestnut mare back on the racecourse soon. Her owners enjoyed a wonderful afternoon at Hereford, and we’re sure there are plenty more like it to come.
