Wendigo Excels To Finish Runner-Up In Challow Novices’ Hurdle – Race Report

Wendigo put in a scintillating performance to finish runner-up in the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle on Saturday 28th December, proving to the racing world what we already knew – we have a potential superstar on our hands!

Despite the bookmakers not fancying his chances (sending him off as a 25/1 outsider), Wendigo certainly outran his odds and then some. Having been held up through the early stages of the race by jockey Gavin Sheehan, Wendigo did look slightly outpaced as they approached three out. However, he battled on gamely and picked off his rivals one by one, eventually passing the market leader Regent’s Stroll and third favourite Bill Joyce in the run-in. The New Lion ran out a dominant winner of the race, but to finish runner-up to him was a hugely commendable effort and leaves us eagerly anticipating his next race.

RACE REPLAY

After the race, jockey Gavin Sheehan gave us his summary:

“It was a brilliant effort. When we jumped off, they went very hard and I was happy with our position in the early stages. He jumped brilliantly throughout the race, despite the ground being a bit on the quick side for him over that distance. He’s run a massive race and hopefully, we’ve got a really nice future over fences with him as well!”

Trainer Jamie Snowden reported the following morning:

“I’m absolutely delighted with his performance – he jumped well and Gavin timed his challenge to perfection to get past some very good horses. After that performance we can look ahead to some of the major festivals later in the season for him, and I can’t wait to watch his career continue to flourish.”

Wendigo has firmly cemented himself as one of the most exciting Novice Hurdlers in the UK this season, and under the expert guidance of Jamie Snowden, we cannot wait to see how the rest of the season unfolds with him!
