Racing Club Insider Tips – Saturday 18th April

We’ve got a brilliant day of racing ahead, with top class flat action at Newbury alongside some strong jumps cards, headlined by Ayr’s Scottish Grand National Day. At this stage of the season, it often pays to tread carefully on the flat, so for now our focus remains over obstacles. That said, we did manage to land a winner on the level at Musselburgh a couple of weeks ago.

15:35 Ayr – GIT MAKER (20/1 Generally Each Way)

Any race featuring the word “National” is typically wide open, and this looks no different, with plenty holding strong chances in Ayr’s feature contest. Jamie Snowden’s GIT MAKER appeals as a touch overpriced.

He should be well suited by the soft ground and arrives on the back of an excellent run in the Midlands National at Uttoxeter, where he finished third, pulling forty seven lengths clear of the rest. He was also a very good third in this race in 2024, highlighting his suitability for the test.

He races here off a favourable weight of 10st 12lb, notably lower than at Uttoxeter, and represents a trainer jockey combination that has enjoyed a superb season. He looks well worth each way support, especially with the extra places on offer.

16:15 Ayr – APACHE TRIBE (15/8 Generally)

APACHE TRIBE has really impressed me in his short career to date. I thought he had an outside chance at Cheltenham, but having missed that engagement, he now looks to have a strong chance here. He made a winning start in a point, scoring by four lengths ahead of the respectable Treasure Memory, before following up in a Listowel bumper with an emphatic sixteen length success.

He was just as impressive on his hurdling debut at this track over 2m4½f, jumping neatly throughout and pulling well clear to win by thirteen lengths. What stands out is how smoothly he travels through his races and how quickly he puts them to bed with minimal fuss. He looks to have a good blend of stamina and speed, which is ideal for a contest like this.

Both of his rules wins have come in fairly ordinary races, so this represents a step up in class and he will need to improve again. However, he looks a talented type with plenty of upside and has been well supported in the market on both starts. He can make his first start for Gordon Elliott a winning one, possibly at the expense of West Hill Verde, who brings fair form claims but seems to be struggling to get his head in front.
