Our impressive Persian Force colt, From Me To You, found things a bit overwhelming on his racecourse debut in a competitive maiden on the 17th April. He struggled to settle beforehand, which was surprising given his laid-back nature at home, and as a result wasn’t able to run the race we had hoped for. However, he did show promise, and we’re hopeful he’ll demonstrate his true level of ability in his next starts.
From Me To You was sent off at 7/2 for the opening race of the flat season at Newbury, taking on eight well-bred fellow debutants. He was coltish beforehand and was sent down to the start earlier than some of the others. Slowly away from stall three, he quickly made up ground to race on the outer, away from the stands-side rail. He travelled powerfully for much of the race and looked likely to play a major role in the finish, but hung badly left around two furlongs out and weakened. Once his chance had gone, Sean Levey looked after him, and he finished seventh.
After the race, jockey Sean Levey gave us his verdict:
“Hugely disappointing really, at home he doesn’t turn a hair and does everything professionally. He has come here and misbehaved to say the least. I thought he was half-speeding at halfway and had the winning of the race but just started hanging left. He hasn’t been at the races today, we will give him the benefit of the doubt on his first go. Hopefully he learns from today, behaves a lot better next time and you’ll see the nice horse that he is.”
Trainer Richard Hannon reported following the race :
“I am not impressed with the way he behaved. He has done a lot of nice work and I was very surprised to see him behave like that as he is very straightforward at home. Sean was thinking at the two marker how far he was going to win by then he goes left-handed, there’s no reason for that he has never done that before. I’ll give him the benefit of the doubt on this occasion and I would like to run him in a weeks time.If he doesn’t behave then we will have to geld him as he’s a talented horse and we want to see that.
This was a disappointing start for a horse we know is capable of much better. It’s still very early days, and we look forward to seeing him out again soon, where we hope he can learn from this and show his true ability.
