Racing Club Insider Tips – Saturday 2nd May

It’s been a mixed bag for the ‘Racing Club Insider’ in recent weeks but the stars have aligned to hopefully give us a helping hand. With Matt over at the Punchestown Festival, trying to teach himself that Guinness is worth persevering with and Willie Mullins can’t win them all, and Tom struggling to transition from the Jump to the Flat, self proclaimed ‘Tipster’ Richard steps into the breach.

He gives three selections, including one at a huge price in the 2,000 Guineas!

Saturday 2nd May

It’s Guineas weekend and the first of the Classics are here! Horse Racing has a history like few other sports and the inaugural 2,000 Guineas was run way back in 1809, won by Wizard. Lets hope we don’t have to be a magician to find a few winners this weekend. There is plenty of other good action around the country with the Hunt Cup at Thirsk one of the most competitive early season Handicaps, Goodwood hosts 2 Listed Fillies Stakes and there are a couple of Grade 1’s to round off the Punchestown Festival. But it would be rude not to focus on HQ and the Rowley Mile.

13:10 Newmarket – CELANDINE (Each Way 10/1 Generally)

A competitive Fillies and Mares Listed Race to start the day, and I think there is some each-way juice in CELANDINE. Ed Walkers 4 year old filly had an excellent 2 year old season before finding life a but tougher last season but the word around Lambourn is that she is back to her former self. She reappeared with a decent 3rd in the Group 3 Summer Stakes last season so proves she can go well fresh and this should be a nice stepping stone back to Group Races later in the season. Anything at double figure prices warrants a good each way bet with 3 places on offer.

13:45 Newmarket – DOUBLE RUSH (10/11 Generally)

I’m not one that usually enjoys taking a short price about a horse, and I’ll get plenty of stick in the office for this one, but DOUBLE RUSH should just win this as he likes. He’s 2-2 from over Course and Distance including last time when he blitzed a decent field on stable debut for Andrew Balding. The word before that race was that his new trainer thought he could well be a Group horse and the fact he was backed into 11/10 supported that point even before the manner of his victory. His rating will go up sharply after this race so it’s a case of making hay whilst the sun shines and I’m confident he’ll get us off to a flier. Maybe one to add to your doubles, trebles and accas!

15:35 Newmarket – PADRAIG DAWN (Each Way 66/1 with 4 Places Bet365)

I know I’m only allowed 2 selections but it would be rude not to discuss the first Classic of the season. Master Trainer Aidan O’Brien has already won 10 of these in an astonishing training career but we have to go back to Magna Grecia in 2019 for his last. He saddles the favourite in Gstaad who brings solid form to the table with a victory in The Coventry at Royal Ascot, fine 2nd’s in the Prix Morny, The National Stakes and The Dewhurst before an eye catching victory in the Breeders Cup Juvenile Turf at Del Mar in November. He’s been highly tried and mostly delivered! Charlie Appleby also has a fine recent record in the race and his apparent second string Kings Trail could be the one to be on. He has a very similar profile to the yards 2024 winner Notable Speech so whilst 2 All Weather wins at Kempton don’t scream Guineas Winner they might just whisper it!

But the Each Way selection has to be Racing Club Co-Founder Gary Gillies colt PADRAIG DAWN. Unraced as a 2-year-old, Padraig Dawn won cosily on debut at Southwell and then was an arguably unlucky 2nd at Newcastle on AW Champs Day when not getting the run of the race. This stronger run race over a stiff 1 mile should suit him down to the ground with the impression there is still more to come. What a story it would be if rookie Trainer Charlie Pike can hit the frame in a Classic in his first season with a licence. The whole of the Racing Club Team are right behind Gary and Charlie! BRING IT HOME!
