Karthon Makes Solid Return To Action At Kempton – Race Report

After a winter absence following an injury, and now settled into Emma Lavelles Bonita Stables to pursue a dual-purpose career, Karthon returned to action at Kempton on Monday 4th May over 2m. Karthon looked in tremendous condition before the race and was a deserving winner of the Best Turned Out award. Congratulations go to his groom for her excellent work.

Sent off at 9/1 in a field of eight, Karthon broke well from stall 3 under David Probert and settled nicely just worse than midfield. There was little change in the order for much of the contest, which gradually developed into a sprint after being run at a steady tempo throughout. The pace lifted slightly down the back straight on the final circuit and, although coming under pressure, Karthon responded well. The long-time leader was eventually worn down by a couple of rivals emerging from midfield, while Karthon kept on nicely to finish fifth, beaten just a nose for fourth in what was a pleasing comeback effort after his time off the track.

After the race, jockey David Probert gave us his verdict on the performance:

“Very happy with Karthon there, he jumped well and relaxed early. Second circuit he was just finding things a little difficult so I really had to put him in position and tell him what he needed to do. He responded quite well when the pace lifted, he was quickening well towards the line and they have probably done him for a little bit of speed. He stayed on well under pressure but may just need a little bit of help, he had his head out to the side a bit at times.”

Trainer Emma Lavelle reported after the race:

“He definitely hit the line strong and relaxed today where in the past he’s been a bit keen. It is good that he gets that trip. He had a nice blow but definitely enjoyed himself and finished out well. He is absolutely fine after the race.”

This was a really encouraging comeback run from Karthon and it was great for his owners to see him back in action while enjoying Bank Holiday Monday from a private box at Kempton. He looks a horse we can have plenty of fun with in the months ahead, with a number of options open to him for his next few runs.
