Karthon is a powerful gelding with a progressive profile and a pedigree that blends top-class performance with depth and durability. He’s a strong mover with a professional attitude, and his recent performances suggest he’s just beginning to tap into his potential. Trained by Andrew Balding at the esteemed Kingsclere Stables, Karthon has been given time to develop and is now starting to deliver on the promise he’s shown at home.
Karthon was sired by New Bay, the Prix du Jockey Club-winning son of Dubawi, hailing from a stallion line that continues to produce high-quality, improving middle-distance horses. New Bay has quickly made his mark at stud, siring Classic winners like Saffron Beach and Bay Bridge, and is known for passing on class, scope, and a strong finishing kick.
Karthon’s dam, Fantasia, was a top-level performer in her own right — a dual Group 3 winner and Group 1-placed mare who was highly regarded on both sides of the Atlantic. She brings further black-type quality to the pedigree and has already produced winners, adding further substance to Karthon’s credentials.
He’s also a half-brother to Fairbanks and Berlin Tango, who have both shown their quality on the track. Fairbanks, a multiple winner over middle distances, was also trained by Andrew Balding — meaning Karthon is in familiar and trusted hands. Berlin Tango, meanwhile, was a Group 3 winner in the Classic Trial at Kempton before moving overseas, further highlighting the strength of the family.
Having made a quiet debut in a novice contest at Goodwood, Karthon has taken clear steps forward since then. Most recently, he produced a career-best effort at Southwell, staying on strongly in a competitive 1m3f handicap to finish a close second, shaping as though further improvement is likely as he matures and potentially steps up in trip again.
“I was delighted that Racing Club managed to buy Karthon to return to Kingsclere, as he’s a horse that I felt was really progressing well and should be competitive now he is in handicaps. He’s from a family we know well, and if he can progress in a similar manner to his half-brother Fairbanks, then we should have a lot of fun with him.” Trainer Andrew Balding.
With his proven stamina, classy pedigree, and scope for continued progress, Karthon is a thoroughly likeable prospect who looks poised to build a solid and successful campaign in the months ahead. He’s in the capable hands of Andrew Balding, whose patient, expert approach consistently brings the best out of progressive middle-distance performers.
