Wendigo has been a star for Racing Club since joining Jamie Snowden, winning two of his three bumper races before excelling over hurdles. He notably finished runner-up in the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle at Newbury and then ran a gallant fifth in the Albert Bartlett Novices’ Hurdle at The Cheltenham Festival.
Trained by multiple Cheltenham Festival-winning trainer Jamie Snowden, Wendigo also holds the accolade of being the first RC Syndicate winner, following his bumper success at Hexham in November 2023. He followed that up with a win under a penalty at Catterick, and later returned with a highly promising second on hurdles debut at Hexham, where the front two pulled 17 lengths clear of the rest.
Jamie was confident he would improve for going over hurdles .In his next three races, Wendigo won twice and finished second in the Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle. His only finish outside the top two came when fifth in the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett, where he was hampered at a crucial stage.
A striking 16”2 gelding, Wendigo boasts an impressive pedigree. He’s by Great Pretender, sire of multiple Grade 1 winners such as Greaneteen and Benie Des Dieux, and he’s showing every sign of following suit.
Having made a strong impression over hurdles, Jamie believes Wendigo will progress further over fences. With his scope and athleticism, he looks every inch a chaser in the making. There’s plenty of anticipation surrounding his novice chasing campaign, with his debut expected in October or November.
“He’s a classy individual, one we were really careful to manage through his bumper and novice hurdle year because I always felt deep down his novice chase season was going to be really crucial. I think without the interference in the Albert Bartlett he would have been third. On the back of that, the temptation was Aintree or Punchestown, but I just knew that this was going to be his year so I didn’t want to go to the well too often as a novice hurdler. We are very much looking forward to seeing him over a fence, he’s tailor made for it and looks an absolute picture. We might have him ready for the middle of October all being well.” – Trainer Jamie Snowden
All the signs suggest Wendigo has the potential to thrive in this next phase of his career. We’re incredibly excited to watch him develop over fences with his owners cheering him on.
