Dunstan completed a memorable hat-trick of successive victories with a fantastic performance at Southwell on Tuesday evening, continuing our red-hot strike rate with our runners this year.
Sent off as 7/2 second favourite, jockey Kieran O’Neill held Dunstan up towards the rear of the field, sitting patiently just behind the odds-on favourite Majed. With just over three furlongs left to run, Kieran pushed the button on Dunstan and made a superb move around the outside, racing to the lead with just over a furlong to go. Majed stayed on late and finished powerfully, but he was no match for our runner, and Dunstan’s won a shade cosily in the end, finishing a head in front of the Gosden runner.
Jockey Kieran O’Neill said after the race:
“He jumped out a bit slow but I was happy with him to sit near the rear of the field. I felt we went a nice gallop, and once I came upside the favourite Majed, I thought I’m just going to keep creeping forward. In truth, I probably got there half a furlong too soon, but he did enough and he keeps finding, so it’s all good! Another great performance from Dunstan.”
The morning after the race, trainer Tom Dascombe reported:
“Dunstan has come out of the race really well, he ate up everything last night and tucked into his breakfast as well this morning. I think he proved last night that he can settle and he’s got a serious turn of foot. I’m really looking forward to his next run and hopefully he can complete the four-timer.”
Dunstan has already made a huge impression at the yard and is the first of our horses to win three races in the RC silks. Fingers crossed for a four-timer in his next run!
