On the evening of a disappointing 0-0 draw for the Three Lions in Boston, Newbury hosted an entertaining seven race card, with Racing Club proudly sponsoring the concluding race at 20:35. The Class 5 Apprentice Handicap over 1m3f had been identified as a suitable target for two Racing Club horses, Redbud Sixteen and Brodie’s Boy. The pair rewarded the many owners in attendance, with the former running out a stunning six length winner and the latter producing an eye catching performance to finish fourth.
The victory continued a fine run of form for the syndicate, bringing up our ninth winner of 2026. It was also our fourth success from just nine runners in 15 days across both codes.
The Racehorse Ownership From £25 At RacingClub.com Apprentice Handicap attracted a field of nine, with Yokohama sent off the 15/8 favourite. Redbud Sixteen, who had bolted up by six and a half lengths at Salisbury on her previous start, was officially 6lb well in under her penalty and duly followed up in impressive fashion. Breaking smartly from stall 3 under Harry Vigors, she quickly took up the lead and never really looked in danger. Travelling strongly throughout, she kicked clear in the straight and stayed on powerfully to score by six lengths, recording the fastest final furlong of the race and completing a remarkable double in dominant style.
After the race, jockey Harry Vigors gave us his verdict on the performance:
“We were given a nice easy lead and I got a breather into her around the bend. I was winding her up in the straight. When I asked her for full effort she lengthened away and she is a very smart filly. There should be bigger and better things ahead.”
Brodie’s Boy was given a patient ride by Myla Coppins, settling towards the rear of the field. Pushed along approaching the four furlong marker, he responded well but did not enjoy the clearest of passages and was forced to switch right in search of daylight. Once in the clear, he finished strongly to take fourth, recording the second fastest final furlong of the race. With a clearer run and perhaps a few extra yards, he may well have finished second.
After the race, jockey Myla Coppins gave us her verdict on the performance:
“He jumped well from the gates and got a nice position. He travelled round well until five out where he hit a bit of a flat spot and I had to get after him, but he picked up again and ran on really strongly to the line.”
It was a fantastic evening for our Racing Club members, who turned out in strong numbers to support their horses at Newbury. We look forward to many more days like this in the future.
